In another grand scheme to harness the energy resources of Earth, the Decepticons drill toward the planet's core to tap into its tremendous heat. The procedure requires great amounts of water, and the occurrence of a dried-out river bed attracts the attention of the Autobots. Following a geological near-accident, Mixmaster takes Scavenger aboveground to adjust his geologic analyzers. The Autobots spot them and attack, but have no option but to retreat, as they cannot contend with the might of Devastator. Starscream expresses concern about the effects of the drill on the Earth, anticipating the destruction of the whole planet. Megatron has prepared for that possibility, however, by installing a miniature space bridge near the drill site. Back at Autobot Headquarters, Chip Chase and Wheeljack propose to gain control of Devastator by secretly planting dominator discs on each of the Constructicons. The next time they combine, Devastator will fall under Autobot control. The scheme works, and Devastator tips the odds in Autobot favour, trapping the Decepticons in their drilling cavern without water to maintain work. However, Megatron possesses the means to counter their control and return Devastator to his proper allegiance. Meanwhile, a secret supply of water enables the drill to continue. Detecting this, the Autobots strike again, but the efforts of both sides to control Devastator cause him to run wild and destroy the Decepticons' only means of escape. As the drill nears the Earth's core, Megatron reluctantly agrees to cooperate with Chip and Wheeljack to bring him back under control. They succeed and Devastator wrecks the drill the instant before it reaches its doom-provoking destination. Devastator then rejoins the Decepticon fold, leaving Chip to ponder the lost asset.
